Adding Waiting Periods To Insurance

Adding waiting periods to an insurance plan lets you set specific times before certain benefits become available. Some plans may block all coverage for a set period, while others have different waiting periods for different types of care. Here’s how to add these waiting periods to a patient’s plan and ensure everything’s set up correctly.

Open the patient’s insurance details and select the three dots in the top menu.

Click Edit.

Navigate to the Carrier and Plan page at the top.

Click Edit Plan in the upper right corner.

Then select Edit Plan.

Locate the first waiting period field. This controls the waiting period for the entire plan. Enter the duration if the whole plan should have no coverage for a set time (usually zero months for most plans).

Click Save to confirm your changes.

To add category-specific waiting periods—like 6 months for basic treatments or 12 months for major services—use the coverage table:

Go to the Deductibles Max and Coverage page.

Click Edit Plan in the upper right corner.

Scroll down to the coverage table.

Look for the waiting period column, which is organized by coverage categories.

Enter the desired waiting period for each category, such as “6 months” for basic restorative or “12 months” for crowns and major services.

After entering your changes, click Save.

Setting up waiting periods this way helps clarify when patients are eligible for benefits under their insurance plan. Review each category to ensure the appropriate timing for coverage, and you’ll streamline onboarding for new insurance policies.
